Introduced some years ago, the Asus Eee PC 701 still has that selling power even today. The Asus Eee PC 701, as one of the Top 5 Netbooks of 2009, uses a 900-MHz Intel Celeron Processor, which is not bad by itself. Some people may say that it’s not enough but it actually starts your applications quickly. You may have trouble using it since it uses Asus Xandros, which is a Linux OS. While it does have a RAM of 512, sadly, its hard drive only carries 4 GB.
The Asus Eee PC 701 is also smaller compared to its 14” LCD counterparts since it only has a 7” screen. Quite small indeed. Bear in mind that this laptop was designed for people who like to travel or who are always on the move. People on the go like to use laptops for checking mails or accomplishing certain office tasks. This laptop is not intended for long usage given its small screen size. Further, because of its size, people won’t even know that you are carrying it. That is a good safety feature if you think about it.
Asus Eee PC 701 also offers users a very easy to understand, friendly, and tab-based interface. All you need to do is memorize these six choices. Internet, Work, Learn, Play, Settings and Favorites. As I said, very easy.
It appeals further to people who like to travel with its e-mail capability and document-handling applications. With the ease of use, it may even appeal not only to children but also the older people who are not yet familiar with computers.
Applications aside, it also supports a variety of digital multimedia like WMA, MP3 and MPEG-4. It goes without saying of course that with only a measly 4 GB of storage space, you won’t be able to hold a lot of digital media.
Start-up is pretty fast and applications also load quickly, even though the Asus Eee PC 701 uses a Celeron processor and a 512MB of RAM.
Specifications:
| SPECS | AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Asus’ website) |
| CPU | Mobile Celeron-M ULV 900MHz |
| RAM | 512 MB |
| Screen Size | Seven-inch 800×480 pixel |
| Operating System | Linux |
| Battery Life | Around 3.5 hours |
| Graphics | Intel GMA 900 |
Pros:
The biggest advantage of the Asus Eee PC 701 is its weight which is less than a kilogram. Although its memory is only 512 MB, you can upgrade it to 1 GB.
You may think that the operating system is a disadvantage but it’s not. If you aren’t too keen on using a Linux OS, you can always change it to Windows XP. You won’t have to worry about running digital media since it has pre-installed plug-ins like Quick Time, Java Runtime Environment, Adobe Flash Player, Real Time Player and Quicktime Player. For people who are always away, you can make use of either Messenger, Skype or Pidgin messaging programs. The programs are also easy to use since it has a user-friendly interface.
Its built-in WiFi 802.11b/g not only allows for fast automatic Internet detection but also connection especially at hot spots.
Lest we forget, the price of the Asus Eee PC 701 is about a fifth compared to its competition.
Cons:
It only has 4 GB of hard drive and that’s not the worst news. You can actually only use around 1 GB since the OS and other programs occupy about 3GB of the space. While you can have an external hard drive, it may be bothersome for most users.
Its built-in camera can only get you up to 0.3 megapixels, lower than even most cameras in mobile phones.
Given its size, it has a lower battery life at 3.5 hours. Other notebooks typically have 5 hours of battery life. Finally, it has no DVD drive so you may want to drive a separate drive if you want to watch movies while travelling.
Conclusion:
The Asus Eee PC 701 may be small but it is snappy. It may not offer much but at its price, it’s a good deal. The size makes it easy to handle and carry anywhere.
