The Asus G71 is a quad-core laptop designed for game-lovers. The currently popular games usually need a powerful computing platform to run smoothly despite heavy requirements. That kind of platform is what the Asus G71 may be. Let us take a closer look at what this laptop offers.

PROS
The Asus G71 stands out due to its emphasis on what gamers require – power and speed. Without these qualities, a gaming laptop may just pass as another laptop. The Asus G71 is powered by a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 and backed up by graphic killer Nvidia GeForce 9700M GT. With this combo, the Asus G71 could handle game resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 and could dish out more detailed and clearer graphics. Moreover, the Asus G71 is reinforced with a 4-GB RAM that ensures faster loading time.
While it sounds great inside, the Asus G71 also looks good outside, at least for gamers. This laptop, particularly its track pad, is peppered with a number of light-emitting diodes. With this feature, it would be easier to locate the track pad in the dark, especially since the laptop keyboard and track pad has a black finish. However, this feature can be disabled if the user finds it too annoying.
The G71 runs in a Linux environment that enables a quick boot of the system. This would allow certain time-constraint users to have a quick peek of their Web sites without fully booting into the Windows Vista system.
CONS
We don’t think that there’s anything that would upset a gamer more than not having enough time to finish a certain stage. The Asus G71 certainly is powerful, but does not have enough battery power to last hours of play. Concerns are on this laptop’s ability to stay only for an hour and a half on full settings. Other gaming laptop like the Gateway’s P7809u FX could last for at least four hours – more than double the time that the Asus G71 is capable of.
Although the Asus G71 is peppered with lots of light emitting diodes, its keyboard lacks ample lighting. The black keys would have been easily noticeable if the Asus G71 has a backlit keyboard.
Another downside we observed with regards to the Asus G71 is its underscored speakers that produce poor sound when playing. This is certainly a no-no when playing certain action-packed games.
CONCLUSION
Asus really has made a one-of-a-kind gaming laptop that could dish out a good gaming experience, but it lacks certain features that may force a potential buyer to totally disregard it.
However, these shortcomings may actually not matter as much to some gamers. The bottom line is that this laptop has a power and a speed that cannot be denied. This gaming machine packs quite a punch, justifying its relatively high price.
